How the Ideal Weight Calculator Works

This calculator compares four well-known ideal body weight formulas side by side, giving you a balanced view rather than relying on a single estimate.

The Four Formulas

  • Devine (1974): Male: 50 + 2.3 × (height_in - 60). Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height_in - 60)
  • Robinson (1983): Male: 52 + 1.9 × (height_in - 60). Female: 49 + 1.7 × (height_in - 60)
  • Miller (1983): Male: 56.2 + 1.41 × (height_in - 60). Female: 53.1 + 1.36 × (height_in - 60)
  • Hamwi (1964): Male: 48 + 2.7 × (height_in - 60). Female: 45.5 + 2.2 × (height_in - 60)

Height is converted from cm to inches (cm / 2.54). Frame size adjusts results by -10% for small frames and +10% for large frames.

Understanding Frame Size

Body frame size affects what weight is healthy for you. People with the same height can have very different healthy weight ranges depending on their bone structure and frame.

Frame Size Categories

  • Small frame: Adjust ideal weight down by 10%
  • Medium frame: Use the standard formula result
  • Large frame: Adjust ideal weight up by 10%

How to Estimate Frame Size

  • Wrap your thumb and middle finger around your wrist
  • If fingers overlap: small frame
  • If fingers just touch: medium frame
  • If fingers do not touch: large frame

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ideal body weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimated weight range considered healthy for a person based on their height, gender, and frame size. Several medical formulas exist to calculate it, each with slightly different results.

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

No single formula is universally best. The Devine formula is most widely used in clinical settings. The Robinson and Miller formulas tend to give more modern, moderate estimates. Comparing multiple formulas gives a more balanced picture.

How does frame size affect ideal weight?

People with smaller frames typically have a lower ideal weight, while those with larger frames can healthily carry more weight. Frame size adjustments typically modify the calculated ideal weight by about 10% in either direction.

Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?

Not exactly. Ideal weight formulas give a single target number, while a healthy weight is better represented by a range, such as the BMI healthy range of 18.5-24.9 for your height. Both concepts are useful reference points.

Why do different formulas give different results?

Each formula was developed by different researchers using different study populations and methodologies. The Devine formula (1974) was designed for medicinal dosing, while Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) aimed to update estimates for modern populations.
